‘What the Day Owes to the Night’ by Herve Koubi brings together an incredible troupe of male dancers from across the Mediterranean Basin. In this work the performers share their connection for urban dance, classical dance and ancient performance rituals. In this physical masterclass, Guillaume will share the techniques he developed to create this game-changing piece of choreography.

About the masterclass:

The intensive will be constructed around the body in motion vs. stillness. Our model will “choreograph” movement that participants will capture in drawings sometimes as fleeting as the moment and at other times held in suspension for longer periods. We will focus on the “loss” of memory and each participants’ capacity to invent when memory fails. We will use repetition both in the models movements and in the drawers’ marks to embed imagery in more developed drawings in charcoal and or materials of the participants’ choice. We will make a lot of drawings and engage in discussion along the way.

About the artist:

Chris Orchard held his first solo exhibition 1975. 1982 Founding member of Central Studios Adelaide. Over 60 solo and group exhibitions to the present. Former Head of Drawing at Adelaide Central School of Art. 1984-1987 joined Air and Space Studios Berry St London. 2000 residency at Gunnery Studios Sydney. 2002 taught Drawing at the New York Studio School. 2011 Awarded the Arts SA Fellowship. 2012 Three month studio development of new work at Present Company, Brooklyn, NY.    In 2017 awarded the SALA feature artist with a publication by Wakefield Press, “Christopher Orchard, The Uncertainty of the Poet with text by Peter Goldsworthy, Margot Osborne, Julia Robinson, Roy Ananda and Rod Taylor. Maintain studio practice in Adelaide and New York to the present. Represented in Adelaide by BMGArt, in Sydney by Wagner Contemporary Galleries and in New York by Stephen Rosenberg Fine Art.

2 Charcoal pencils, medium. (Central Art Supplies at Glenside have terrific “Peel & Sketch” charcoal pencils, just an option.)

2, Sticks compressed charcoal, medium & soft. Conte also makes an HB compressed charcoal that participants may find interesting

About the masterclass:

This one-day masterclass/workshop is focused on temporary site-based and unexpected art events in the public domain. Taking its lead from Ella’s innovative approaches that utilise performance and visual art strategies, to creatively transform mundane public spaces into dynamic spaces of playful artistic expression. Masterclass/workshop participants will be invited to explore the importance of individual participation in public space by means of context - based actions, events and performance proposals.

This masterclass/workshop will offer local Adelaide artists a fertile space to share, learn, create and exchange ideas, skills and processes. The overall directives will open up new ways of thinking, doing and making in a collaborative and collegial gathering that will extend and address each participating artists’ own practices and interests.

Richard Cilli trained at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts before joining Sydney Dance Company in 2009, and in 2010 he won and the Helpmann Award for Best Male Dancer for his performance in Rafael Bonachela‘s We Unfold. He has danced for Sydney Dance Company, Dancenorth, K.Kvarnström & Co (Stockholm), Lucy Guerin Inc. and various independent choreographers around Australia. As a choreographer he has created works for Sydney Dance Company, The Australian Ballet, LINK Dance Company, and WAAPA, as well as his own independently produced work. He joined Chunky Move in 2018 to work with Anouk van Dijk on Common Ground, and since then has danced for the company in Anti Gravity (Netherlands Tour), Accumulation (National Gallery Victoria), and the film Traces. 2019 has seen Richard co-produce and perform alongside celebrated percussionist Claire Edwardes inRecital directed by Gideon Obarzanek for Sydney’s March Dance festival and Melbourne’s Dance Massive.

Richard is a certified Countertechnique teacher and continues to perform, choreograph, teach, mentor and produce around Australia.

About the masterclass:

Countertechnique provides tools for body and mind to deal with the deman­ding dance practice of the 21st century. It is a movement system to help the dancer think about the dancing body, focusing on the process of incorporating information into action. Within a clear structure of exercises, the Countertechnique class thoroughly prepares the body for rehearsal and performance, enabling dancers to move bigger, more fluidly and more spatially, while becoming stronger and more flexible.

About the choreographer:

Hofesh Shechter is no ordinary choreographer. Israeli born, London-based, Shechter exploded into the contemporary dance world when, as a relative unknown, his 2007 work In Your Rooms was hailed as one of the most important new works of the millennium.

Since then, he’s built an arrestingly powerful body of work, almost singlehandedly creating a new genre: part dance, part gig, part theatre. Critics try to encapsulate his work with words like ‘exultant’, ‘visceral’, and ‘ecstatic’, and certainly his trademark gestural language – derived from folkdance, military exercise, club-dancing and even the gym – is addictively hypnotic.

About the masterclass:

This Hofesh Shechter Company professional masterclass opens with a class in the style of the company to enable a full understanding of the movement principles of Hofesh’s work, and his key use of improvisation in his choreography. This is then followed by the opportunity to learn a short extract of Hofesh Shechter’s latest repertoire Grand Finale. Adelaide Fringe Masterclass: Men With Coconuts (comedy / circus / performers)

Scotland's leading improv troupe make their Australian debut in Adelaide with award winning improvised comedy sketches and songs, culminating in a showstopping finale -- an entirely improvised musical. These Edinburgh Fringe favourites push their art form to a new level. Unplanned, unscripted, and unbelievable!

Their masterclass presented by The Mill allows the participants to explore improvised comedy as a form, with an emphasis on character emotion and response within the framework of a scene. Adelaide Fringe Masterclass: SHOWKO (Rakugo / comedy)

Welcome to the quirky and hilarious world of Showko -- Australia's favourite Japanese comedian. Wonderfully funny and off-beat, Showko's blend of stand-up, puppetry, ventriloquism and Rakugo (Japanese storytelling comedy) is hugely entertaining and utterly unique. Growing up in the kookiest culture on earth, she escaped into a childhood fantasy world of making and talking to puppets -- now it's her job.

Expand your cultural horizons with this masterclass into a 400 year old Japanese storytelling art form. This is a rare opportunity for Australian artists and performers to learn from Showko - The only professionally trained Japanese Rakugo artist currently working outside of Japan.

A Rakugo story is told by a performer who has to act out a story by themselves with only two humble props, a folding fan (Sensu) and hand towel (Tenugui). They must be able play the role of each distinct character by changing personality, facial expression, mannerisms, speech, etc. Due to the simple structure they can express and describe anything, drawing the viewer into the story through their imagination.

This masterclass covers the very traditional fundamental structure of Rakugo.

About Eko Supriyanto
Founder and artistic director for EkosDance Company and Solo Dance Studio in Surakarta Indonesia, Eko is the leading Indonesian dancer and choreographer of his generation.
Trained in Javanese court dances and the Indonesian martial arts of Pencak Silat since the age of seven Eko’s performance career spans major works and tours throughout Indonesia, Europe, America and the Asia Pacific. Eko holds a PhD in Performance Studies (2014) from Gadjah Mada University and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Dance and Choreography from the UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures (2001).
Eko’s performance career stretches between major commercial productions to dance research projects. He was enlisted as a dance consultant for Julie Taymor’s Lion King Broadway production and choreographed and performed for major international productions including Peter Sellars Le Grand Macabre, John Adam’s Opera Flowering Tree in Vienna, the Barbican Centre in London and the Lincoln Center in New York, Garin Nugroho’s Opera Jawa, MAU Lemi Ponifasio’s Tempest, Solid.States with Arco Renz, and was a featured dancer in Madonna’s 2001 Drowned World.

His recent major work is Cry Jailolo with seven youth dancers from Jailolo North Maluku and will be touring in Japan, Australia and Europe in August- October 2015. Most recent performance research on the Body Embodiment of Indonesian Dancers is connected to his work on maritime culture entitled The Future of Dance is Under Water.

One have seen her jump from the top of a crane to attack a piano with axe and scissors, rip off herself her fairy dress made of white ties to distribute the pieces to the audience while performing a teddybear dance, bury herself with a clown costumes under a rain of baloons, locked up behind bars in a duet with a chicken, or dressed up as a mushroom... About the Masterclass

Berlin-based dancer-choreographer Yui Kawaguchi has worked extensively in the global arena and collaborated with many different types of artists. In this masterclass, she focuses on how the body communicates with the outside world through interaction with music, words and space. Exercises related to joints and abdominal muscles help participants understand the condition of their own body while breathing techniques and other approaches improve balance and precision. Physical capabilities are then explored through improvisation before undertaking a choreographed work that celebrates the sheer joy of dancing.

About Yui Kawaguchi:

Yui Kawaguchi, choreographer/performer, has studied Classical Ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop and contemporary dance, acting and singing. She danced by H.art.chaos (1998-2000) , Kota Yamazaki/Rosy, co (2000-2002) and Motoko Hirayama (2007), performing in Japan, the USA and Europe. She also has worked with film directors such as Makoto Tezuka, Yoshimasa Ishibashi. She choreographed for the opening festival of East Asian Olympic 2001, and has also worked with music videos, TV-CF, films, concerts and fashion shows. Between 2001- 2003, she worked as a choreographer and performer with the “media drive unit 66b/cell". Together with this multimedia performance group, she was engaged in developing the three-year project, "test-patches", which integrated composers, visual artists, system engineers with performers. The project was invited to perform at ARS Electronica (Linz), Seoul International Dance Festival and Japan Virtual Reality Conference, etc. Since 2005, she works in Berlin. She performed by Ismael Ivo, Helena Waldmann, NICO AND THE NAVIGATORS, Michaela Lucenti and Tomi Paasonen, among others. Her own piece have featured at a number of festivals. In 2006 she received the Jury’s Prize at the Yokohama solo-duo competition.

In 2008 her Solo REM － Black Cat was presented in New National Theater Tokyo. Since 2008 she works in collaboration with Jazz pianist Aki Takase. She is also engaged in research project with a sociologist and a cognitive scientist. Together with them she developed the Audio-Dance-Performance "HEREing Loss" and gave workshop in Keio University, Japan. She is the original cast of the successful cross over project "Flying Bach“, by Christoph Hagel and Flying Steps in New National Gallery Berlin, in which she choreographed contemporary part. This project won the "Echo Klassic Sonderpreis 2010". In May her new solo performance "andropolaroid“ was premiered in Cologne and become awarded "Der Kölner Tanztheaterpreis 2010".

In this masterclass, led by SA-based photographer and visual artist Andrew Dearman, participants will build their own 'Afghan Box Camera' from easy-to-find materials.

On day one, Dearman will lead the class through building the cameras with participants using their handmade contraptions to shoot and develop photographs on day two. No darkroom is required - these cameras are mini darkrooms too!

An old aphorism states that every time we make a representation of a head we are representing ourselves. This 2-day studio-based workshop will navigate notions of identity through the drawing of the head. For hundreds of years artists (in particular), have made images and objects based on the head, from observation and invention. The Avatar, the invented being is often a character the artist uses to examine the human condition and elements of Identity.

Participants will be guided through a series of strategies that provide opportunities to make small and large scale drawings of the head, their own and others and through repetition observe the evolution of the physiognomy of the entities drawn. In part I remain fascinated by the variability of the hand made, the slippages that become doors to invention.

Artists to consider include DaVincis’ Grotesques, Holbein, Antonia Carriera, William Blake, Goya, Van Gogh, De Chirico, Giacometti, Botero, Dobell Paula Rego, Mike Parr, Barry McGee, Jenny Saville, William Kentridge, Godwin Bradbeer.

About the Masterclass

Rehearsal Director for XENOS, Mavin Khoo will lead a masterclass that will start with a warm up developed to facilitate the stylistic qualities of Khan’s work: speed, articulation of the body, rhythmic musicality and physical precision. Followed by a creative session drawing from motifs used in the creative phase of XENOS, dancers will be introduced to Khan’s process of devising solo material.

About Mavin Khoo

Mavin Khoo is internationally recognised as a dance artist, teacher, choreographer and artist scholar. His initial training was at the Temple of Fine Arts, Sutra Dance Theatre and Sri Wilayah Ballet School in Malaysia. He the pursued his training in Bharata Natyam intensively under the legendary dance maestro, Padma Shri Adyar K. Lakshman in India, Cunningham technique at the Cunningham studios in New York and Classical Ballet under Marian St. Claire, Michael Beare, Nancy Kilgour, Paul Lewis, Ayumi Hikasa, Raymond Chai and Tory Jestyn. As a contemporary dance artist he has worked with Wayne McGregor, Akram Khan, Shobana Jeyasingh, amongst others. His commissioned works include creations for the Venice Biennale and Canada Dance Festival to name a few. Images in Varnam (2001) was commissioned by the Royal Ballet Artists Development Initiative and was followed by another ROH2 commission Let me... with Royal Ballet dancer Kristen McNally.

Khoo is considered one of the few Bharata Natyam male soloists to have carved a niche for himself as an international touring solo artist, whilst still regularly dancing at all major venues in India, including the Music Academy and Kalakshetra in Chennai.

His own company, mavinkhooDance, was founded in 2003. Productions include Parallel Passions (2003), Chandra/Luna (2004-2005), Devi: The Female Principle (2006), Strictly Bharata Natyam (2006), Devi: In Absolution (2008), Dancing my Shiva (2010), 00.00 - 00.01 (2011), Akasha (2012), I am with you, Muruga (2013) and Intoxicating the Blue Lord (2016).
Khoo holds a MA in Choreography from Middlesex University. He was faculty member of the Dance Studies Department (at the School of Performing Arts) at the University of Malta. In 2014, he was appointed artistic director of ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble, where he also choreographed and danced until 2017.

Khoo now maintains his touring work as a mature artist with a focus on solo Bharata Natyam performances and specifically commissioned contemporary duet works. He continues to act as Rehearsal Director for Akram Khan Company working on productions such as XENOS (2018), iTMOi (2013) and Giselle (2016) with English National Ballet.

About the Masterclass

This class will be led by four Bangarra Company dancers'
Tara Robertson, Tyrel Dulvaire, Rika Hamaguchi and Baden Smith! This masterclass is designed for dance students/professionals with formal dance training. After a brief introduction about Bangarra, a short warm up will follow in the Bangarra contemporary style. The workshop will then progress to the teaching of selected repertoire from the current season or from the vast body of work created by the company over the past 20 years. A brief Q &A session with the dancers will end the session.

Clown Academy: Clowning Playshop

Access your inner Clown. Enjoy being you. Appreciate the power of laughter and joy!

What to Expect:

Each workshop covers three main elements:
1. Physical Movement: mime, slapstick, movement, dance.
2. Improvisation: The role of Status, short and long form improvisation; structure of game playing; developing your unique character; regional styles of clowning; theory types of laughter.
3. Technical Work: Circus skills, mask work, making fun music, manipulation of everyday objects, puppets. Creating routines: the process, structure and content of solo, partner and group performances. It is suggested that you wear loose comfortable clothing as the sessions are interactive.

Who can participate? Everyone! No matter your age or profession, with or without previous clowning experience. Artists - to broaden their range as professionals. Guidance is provided for the creation and staging of acts. Social/Health Workers- to integrate the art of clowning as a medium of intervention and healing through fun and laughter.

About David Cronin

In the 1970’s there were three stunt performance groups in Adelaide, ready for the film industry to take off. David Cronin trained and performed with two of them and three years later was teaching the craft in Sydney. David trained in mime, acrobatic and circus skills with Boris Svidensky from the Moscow Circus in a Drama School in Israel, then continued with Cornelia Vladimir Rodzianko in their Berlin theatre ensemble ‘Stimme und Bewegung.’ David went on to work freelance and started teaching theatre in Europe. Further training with polish theatre group ‘Gardienize’ [Grotowski training] and other artists & directors, e.g. Yoshi Oida. Across his colourful and varied career David has: studied mask, mime and Clown at the International Theatre School in Rome with Emanuel Gallot-Levalee, had a long lasting career as a solo, duo and group clown and entertainer and a sixteen year career as a Clown Doctor in Adelaide. He currently: teaches and coordinates Laughter Yoga Adelaide, is a corporate speaker for humour and health in the work place/school, directs and produces shows and performs in libraries, schools and festivals.

It is suggested that you wear loose comfortable clothing as the sessions are interactive.

About Micheal Getman

Born in Israel to a Russian/Jewish parents, Dora & Zacharia. Michael received his professional training at the Bat Dor School of Dance, under the directory of Ms. Ordman, Tel Aviv, Israel. After graduating He started his journey as a professional dancer and performer. Michael worked and interpreted works by Ohad Naharin, Amanda K Miller, Marguerite Donjon, Bill Forsythe and Michael Schumacher. At the age 17 Michael joined the young Bat Sheva Ensemble Company Directed By Naomie Perlov and Ohad Naharin. After a year at the Junior company he was invited by Ohad Naharin to join the Bat Sheva Dance Company. In 1999 Michael Joined ‘The Ballet Freiburg Pretty Ugly Dance Company’, Directed by Amanda K Miller. Between 2002-2003 Michael was dancing at the Stats Theatre Saarbrucken, Artistic Director Marguerite Donlon, before joining the last season of Ballet Freiburg Pretty Ugly 2004. His first Choreographic project, a site specific project, was an artistic collaboration with artists from the field of dance, music/sound, and theatre; facilitating an old cotton factory in Saarbrucken, Germany 2003.

About the Masterclass

Led by company artistic director Lucy Guerin herself, the masterclass will be an introduction to some of the ideas and movement processes used to develop SPLIT. It will involve a short warm-up followed by a section of choreography taught by the dancers Melanie Lane and/or Lillian Steiner. There will also be some time to develop some individual material, based on tasks devised for the creation of Split.

ilDance Intensive: 2018

Our friends from ilDance Sweden will join the mill for two intensive weeks of class in January and April 2017.

Morning Class at The Mill

As 2017 kicks off, start your year with gentle morning class to get you back in your body through the beauitful movement teachings of Israel Aloni and Lee Brummer of ilDance (SWEDEN), and thorugh Erin's (THE MILL) Qoya movement classes - which brings you back into the body thorugh various embodiment practices.
